The city of Bunnell’s administration continues its upheaval with the announcement of Cynthia Bertha’s resignation from her position as finance director.

“Based on decisions made in recent months, the vision of the current board majority has changed and many years of hard work and progress that your team has accomplished will essentially come undone,” Bertha wrote in a July 12 letter of resignation to City Manager Armando Martinez.

In June, the Bunnell City Commission decided in a 3-2 vote not to renew Martinez’s contract when it expires in October.

His termination sparked anger from some. City Commissioner Jenny Crain-Brady suggested that the vote against Martinez was planned. Commissioner Elbert Tucker made the motion without explanation of his reasoning behind it, saying he feared legal repercussions if he spoke against the city manager.

The commission voted on whether to fire Martinez during an April meeting as well, but that time, he survived by a 3-2 vote in his favor.

Bertha is not the first city administrator to resign this year.

In April, City Clerk Dan Davis announced his own resignation during a commission meeting, saying that he could not work for Martinez anymore because of an alleged affair between Bertha and Bunnell City Police Chief Jeff Hoffman. Davis criticized Martinez for doing nothing about the allegations.

Martinez said that if the alleged affair were true, there was nothing he could legally do about it

Davis announced his resignation during the same meeting that the commission first voted about Martinez’s job.

Then, in May, Sid Nowell, the city’s attorney at the time, announced his resignation, citing health issues.

Bertha said in her letter of resignation that she accepted a position at another company, which she did not name. Her last day of work for the city will be Aug. 2.
