A Palm Coast man was arrested Sunday after fleeing from a deputy who attempted a traffic stop against him.

Once he was detained, Cedric McKay, 28, told that he ran because he thought he had a warrant against him and that he didn’t want to go to jail, since he’d just been released from prison, according to an arrest report.

The chase began when a deputy who was conducting extra patrols along Old Kings Road North because of a string of nearby vehicle break-ins noticed a white car parked sideways in the parking spots in front of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post. The deputy pulled behind the white car in his unmarked Dodge Charger and activated his emergency lights.

The suspect vehicle immediately sped off, jumping nearby parking lot curbs to get onto Old Kings Road North. The deputy pursued.

As the delinquent vehicle approached Palm Coast Parkway, it was met by a red light, so the car jumped the median and traveled southbound in the northbound lands, toward oncoming traffic. The vehicle then turned and proceeded westbound on Palm Coast Parkway, approaching I-95.

The deputy, trailing behind as he reached the top of the I-95 overpass, saw the delinquent vehicle traveling on the right shoulder lane of Palm Coast Parkway, passing vehicle. The deputy lost sight of the vehicle near Belle Terre Parkway as it headed toward U.S. 1. The vehicle did not exceed speeds of 60 miles per hour throughout the chase, according to the arrest report.

Other patrol units located the vehicle, and it finally stopped on Deen Road. The driver was identified as McKay, who said that he ran because he thought he had an active warrant against him and he did not want to go to jail because he had just been released from prison.

McKay’s passenger completed a voluntary statement, in which she said she was telling McKay to stop the vehicle but that he refused to do so.

McKay was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding a police officer and taken to the Flagler County Inmate Facility on $2,5000 bail. He has since been released on bond.
