The fire department will begin its annual testing of fire hydrant water flow next month.

BY THE OBSERVER STAFF

The fire department will begin annual inspections of the city’s 1,600 fire hydrants and their water flow over the next few weeks.

Testing will be conducted 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday,  March 18-31. Workers ask that residents with a hydrant in their yard keep it clear of obstructions.

During the flow testing, firefighters will open the hydrants for several minutes to get accurate flow pressures. As a result, the city said, tap water may become “discolored or cloudy,” which will be a temporary condition and can be corrected by letting the water run for a few minutes.

If tap water remains cloudy or discolored after a few minutes of flow, contact the city’s public works department: 676-3220.

Inspections are performed annually to ensure the hydrants will provide an adequate water supply when needed.
