The grocery-store checkout lines can be intimidating. It seems that slim, beautiful women are on every magazine cover, and each one promises tips for weight loss and getting in shape. But is it really possible for the everyday Ormond Beach resident to make such a transformation?

I was talking to Advertising Account Manager Sarah Hechler in the Ormond Beach Observer office recently, and she told me about a woman whom she and her mother saw every day walking on LPGA Boulevard. Day after day, she walked and walked, and she got slimmer and slimmer. Finally, Sarah’s mother stopped the car one day.

She told the woman, “You look amazing! I’ve been watching you for two years, and you look great.”

The walker started crying. It had clearly been a battle with weight loss, and she was winning.

In the meantime, check this list out:

How to keep the weight off during the holidays

1. Eat from a smaller plate to help keep your portions smaller.

2. Walk around after you eat, instead of sitting down.

3. Get a buddy to help keep you accountable during the season of tempting treats and holiday parties.

4. Make exercising as important as a doctor's appointment — especially now!

5. Bring bite-size desserts or appetizers to the next holiday party, instead of full servings. This is sure to help your friends and family, not just you!

6. Be mindful of your alcohol intake. Replace your beverage with water as often as you can.

7. Never go to a holiday party hungry. Plan ahead and eat before you show up. This will keep you from eating all those “no-no” foods.
