It really didn’t take very long for Miracle Porter to prove her ability on the high school soccer field.
In fact, it only took 15 games.
Porter, a freshman at Matanzas, scored her 40th goal last Friday in a hat-trick performance, leading the Lady Pirates (14-1) to a 6-1 drubbing of Deltona.
At 40 goals, Porter has set the single-season goal-scoring record at Matanzas for boys or girls. (The previous record was believed to be 39, although school officials couldn’t officially confirm that number.)
Porter is averaging 2.6 goals per game. She has seven games with three goals and three games with four goals. In total, she has a hat trick or more in 10 of the team's 15 games.
For a freshman, those numbers are absurd. And, with eight regular season games remaining, there’s no reason Porter can’t add to her goal total substantially.
Her goal total at the end of the season is going to be scary. That’s for sure.
But the numbers the Matanzas girls soccer team has put up this season are just as scary-good.
Through 15 games, the Lady Pirates have scored 106 goals and have given up just six. Sophomore keeper Bella Benvenuto has already tallied 10 shutouts and has allowed just five goals this season.
Matanzas is scoring about seven goals a game.
There’s plenty of season left, but keep an eye out for the Matanzas girls soccer team come districts.
Area soccer teams dominating
Domination on the soccer pitch isn’t just happening at Matanzas, though. All four area soccer teams have winning records.
(Note: These records are as of Dec. 9.)
At Matanzas, the boys team is 8-2-2. Add that to the girls’ team record, and Matanzas is 22-3-2.
At Flagler Palm Coast, the boys are 6-1-2 , and the girls are 13-2-2. That’s a 19-3-4 combined record.
And so, all four Flagler County high school soccer teams are a combined 41-6-6. Talk about winning.
Contributing away from the field
The Matanzas girls soccer team is doing good things away from the field, too. Over the weekend, a group of players helped paint a Flagler Habitat for Humanity home in Bunnell. The players included Claire Slamka, Payton Tucker, Savannah Tyler and Haley McQueen.
