An American-Islamic Relations official sent a letter to the Volusia County School Board regarding comments that were made during the Islam textbook meeting.

The Volusia County School Board received a letter from Hassan Shibly, Tampa executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in regard to  things that were said at the meeting about the amount of attention Islam received in a 10th-grade history textbook.

The letter first applauds the board for its decision to keep the textbook, and then reads as follows:

“I am concerned by School Board Member Mrs. Linda Costello apparently accusing me of lying in a statement to a county body: ‘I know the people outside that he (Mr. Shibly) was talking about, and I don’t believe they said the things he accused them of.’ “Yes those statements, including ‘Islam is not peaceful,’ ‘Islam does not belong in America,” “Why do you muslims want to kill everyone who doesn’t believe what you believe?” and “Why do you muslims want to overthrow our country?”, were in fact made, to me, outside the School Board meeting. In fact, much worse and more offensive statements were made.”

Shibly went on to say that the protestors who said these things are “sincerely misinformed, but many are hatefully misguided.”

He also stated in the letter that he had a protestor apologize to him after the event.
