To save energy and electricity costs, the city of Palm Coast is installing push-button lighting for evening use of recreation facilities at four city parks.

Two push-button lights have already been installed at Ralph Carter Park. One is between the skateboard ramps and playground, and the other is at the basketball courts. Ralph Carter Park is located at 1385 Rymfire Drive.

By the end of September, there will be push-button lights installed at the following places: Seminole Woods Neighborhood Park, at 350 Sesame Blvd.; Belle Terre Park, at 339 Parkview Drive; and the Palm Coast Community Center, at 305 Palm Coast Parkway N.E.

Once the sun sets, park visitors will need to activate the lighting by pushing a push-button light switch on a nearby concrete post. A sign will be posted on each of the posts explaining the program and providing instructions on how to keep the lights on while the park is in use.

Upon initial activation, the lights will come on for one hour. A few minutes before they are scheduled to turn off, a strobe will flash atop the concrete post where the push-button light switch is located. Members of the public using the facility can push the button for an additional hour of lighting. The cycle will repeat hourly until the lights go out at 10 p.m.

This way, the lights will be on only when needed. Previously, the lights stayed on from sunset until 10 p.m. regardless of whether the facility was in use.

A similar system for court/playground lighting has been in place for a number of months at Holland Park, at 18 Florida Park Drive. The success of that program led to the city’s decision to add push-button lighting at the other parks.
