Upward camp shows life isn’t just about winning on the court

Dear Editor:
Pastor Kevin Lautar, of First Baptist of Palm Coast, asked me to volunteer for Upward Basketball Camp the week of July 29. It was held at First Baptist Church of Bunnell.

There I met coach Gary McDaniel, of Flagler Palm Coast High School, and several students from the basketball team that he had brought with him. These students were the coaches for the camp. I had to step back, and in awe I watched these students instruct and interact with the campers. They weren't just good at working with the campers, they were great.

Isn't it refreshing to know that life isn't about winning or losing on the court, but winning at life skills? Thank you, Pastor Kevin, Pastor Ryan, and Coach McDaniel, but most of all thank you, students, for a very memorable week for a senior citizen.

Focus on bringing jobs to Palm Coast, not City Hall

Dear Editor:
The push is on for a new City Hall. The city missed a golden opportunity to purchase City Marketplace. They would have had all the room they needed and could have configured it any way they liked with labor provided by city workers, as they did with the new substation for the sheriff.

But in Mr. Landon’s and some council members’ minds, we need a new City Hall building in Town Center. It seems a lot of people are behind this big push; unfortunately, they are the people who own property in Town Center and their friends.

Mr. Landon and friends seem to have an “If we build it, they will come” attitude. Has Mr. Landon and the council driven around our city lately and seen all the empty stores and buildings? Maybe we work on filling those first.

Maybe Mr. Landon should direct his attention to finding companies to move to Palm Coast and bring jobs. Give up trying to find a way around the voters and work on getting good employers here. And not more fast food and dollar stores.
