Carl Laundrie is “eating, talking, and looking like the same Carl we all know,” days after an accident that left him hospitalized, said County Administrator Craig Coffey on Monday.

Laundrie, the county’s communications manager, crashed into a pond by the Emergency Operations Center on Aug. 9 after having a seizure of some kind. Laundrie was resuscitated, but was breathing on his own by Friday night.

On Saturday, Laundrie was awake and eating on his own, and on Sunday, he was moved from the intensive care unit to the progressive care unit. His release is expected this week.

Laundrie does not remember the accident at all. Doctors believe they have found the problem and have him on medication, Coffey said.

Laundrie is a former editor and reporter for the Daytona Beach News-Journal. He is often looked to for historical background on county issues and is well liked among county staff and the press.
