The annual Feed Flagler effort to collect nonperishable food has officially begun.
This year’s theme is “Focusing on Families” with the emphasis shifting from a community Thanksgiving meal to assisting families to have their own Thanksgiving meals at home. To that end, instead of the 11 meal sites provided in the past, Feed Flagler will have five sites in the county that will provide the hot Thanksgiving meal.
The canned food drive will continue, allowing participating churches and organizations to distribute Family Meal Boxes, including a frozen turkey and fixings.
“It takes the entire community to make this happen each year,” County Commission Chairman Nate McLaughlin said. “From the smallest monetary contribution, to hours of volunteer effort, everyone in Flagler County is welcome to pitch in and do their part.”
There are several ways individuals, organizations and businesses can participate. Financial contributions are needed to provide the hot meals and provide funding for operating food pantries in Flagler County. Volunteers are also needed to sort the nonperishable canned goods, assist at various fundraising activities, etc. Individuals interested in registering as a volunteer may contact Flagler Volunteer Services at 597-2950.

In past years, the Flagler County Sheriff's and Tax Collector's Office have had a fierce competition for teh traveling trophy for raising the most funds. At the July 29 kick-off event, Sheriff Jim Manfre noted that Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston wasn't in attendance because “she couldn’t stand the heat.”
Those who want to assist either elected official in their quest for the trophy can donate to their effort or just mail a check made payable to the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners, 1769 E. Moody Blvd., Building 2, Bunnell Fla. 32110.
When it comes to nonperishable food, United Way’s team “Chicks With Cans” has steamrolled over all the competition for the past five years. Last year the Flagler County School Board came in second followed closely by Florida Hospital Flagler. Altogether 523 boxes of groceries were gathered up.
