Sixteen Palm Coast residents have officially applied for the City Council District 2 seat, according to City Clerk Virginia Smith.
"It certainly shows that people are interested," Mayor Jon Netts said. "It gives City Council a variety of options."
The seat is open because current City Councilman Frank Meeker has resigned to run for the County Commission.
Applications, letters of interest and resumes are due to Smith by 4 p.m. Oct. 25 and given to City Council by Oct. 29. Then, the City Council will review and rank the applicants and narrow the field down to four, similar to the process that took place in 2008.
Interviews with the four remaining applicants will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 13. Then, a special business meeting will be held so the City Council can pick their choice from the four they interviewed. The new City Council member will be sworn in on Nov. 20.
In the event of a tie, a coin toss will take place — which is what happened in 2008.
The new member will finish Meeker's term, which ends in November 2014, but can also run for reelection.
District 2 covers the bulk of the northeast section of the city and some areas of Matanzas Woods, west of Interstate 95.

The city of Palm Coast is currently accepting applications for the City Council District 2 seat, which will be vacated this fall by Frank Meeker (who is running for County Commission).
