Flagler Beach has been selected by “Where to Retire,” a magazine geared toward helping people with retirement relocation decisions, as a top retirement destination. The barrier island will be profiled in “4 Florida Beach Hideaways” in the November/December 2012 issue, which hits newstands nationwide on Oct. 16.

“Where to Retire” editor Mary Lu Abbott said Flagler Beach possesses qualities important to today’s retirees.

“These four small beach locales maintain an Old Florida feel, giving retirees respite from crowds and congested freeways, yet still within reach of urban amenities," Abbot said. "Anna Maria Island and Englewood on the Gulf and Fernandina Beach and Flagler Beach on the Atlantic offer boomers beautiful beaches, outdoor fun and a sense of escapism.”

Each year, 700,000 Americans relocate to new towns to retire. Generally, relocating retirees are healthier, better educated and more affluent than those who choose not to relocate. They bring significant economic benefits to their new states and hometowns, according to the magazine.

Nationally, two dozen states and hundreds of towns seek to attract retirees as a source of economic development.
