The bleating of goats, cluck of chickens and human chatter from exotic parrots are the first sounds that greet customers to NatureScapes Nursery, in Bunnell. According to owner Marylou Baiata, the animals all have a purpose.

“The goats eat organic debris and weeds on the grounds which keeps that waste out of the landfill, and the chickens are natural pest control eating insects,” Baiata said. Even the parrots, all rescued birds, have their jobs as ambassadors. “They say hello and entertain the customers," she said.

Baiata opened her first garden nursery in 1984 and has expanded during the past 28 years to include a florist shop, which opened in 1998.

“The business has grown slowly over the years,” she said. “Reinvest, reinvest and reinvest and build on a solid foundation,” she said. “It’s all about your customers.”

Her advice to new companies is one word: passion. “I could not do this without passion," she said. "You have to be passionate about your work and your career.”

The vision of the company is the same as it was in 1984: a commitment to the environment and to share her enthusiasm for organic gardening and landscaping with her customers.

“We don’t want to be part of the pollution, we want to be part of the solution,” the website states.

She describes the company “as more than a landscape company, garden center and florist. ... We are a walk in nature.”
