A dirty car inspired Gunnar and Pam Hildemann to move to Palm Coast full time and build Coconuts Car Wash.

“We would come down to our house here and have to drive to Ormond Beach to get the car washed,” Gunnar Hildemann said.

The couple began looking into the car wash business and quickly realized it was something they would enjoy. Research into the new venture included a trip to Las Vegas by Gunnar Hildemann for a business convention.

“I didn’t step into one casino while I was there,” he said. “Instead, I talked to everyone I could to learn about the business.”

From his research, he learned there wasn’t another ca rwash facility like it in the county and their new venture started to become a reality: a state-of-the-art car wash with a fun theme and name.

“We wanted a tropical theme and our dog’s name is Coco Channel,” Gunnar said. “It’s a blend of both.”

The facility is bright and cheerful, with a customer lounge situated between the wash tunnel and vacuum area.

“We invested more than $3 million to make this car care center,” Gunnar Hildemann said.

General manager Chas Lines oversees the crew, which is always in motion. The few times cars aren’t being directed through the 120-foot wash tunnel, the staff is busy straightening up magazines in the customer lounge, refilling the Dunkin' Donuts coffee and scrubbing the vacuum area.

“We have the best employees,” Pam Hildemann said. “We don’t have a lot of turnover. We have a waiting list for jobs.”
