The expression “when a door closes a window opens” is an apt sentiment for Rick and Debbie Staly and their Palm Coast business, American Eagle Sentry.

The closing door was the couple’s loss of employment, the window was creating their own business.

“My wife and I were working for Ginn Development and were laid off like so many others,” Rick Staly said. “We could go on unemployment and face financial ruin or start our own company. We decided to not be part of the problem but part of the success.”

Success came in the form of American Eagle Sentry, a premium security services company that carved out a niche of upscale resorts, condominiums, businesses and gated communities.

“We are a security officer and patrol company licensed in the state of Florida," Ricky Staly said. "We predominately are serving Central Florida through Northeast Florida with security services with a concierge touch."

The Stalys depend on their staff of 128 — 65 employees in Palm Coast — to deliver the services. The acronym STAARS (Security, Teamwork, Accountability, Attitude, Reliability and Service) is the business philosophy.

“We go that extra step,” Rick Staly said. “All of the patrol cars are equipped with AEDs (automated external defibrillators), first aid kits, critter and snake catchers and radar equipment. The radar is more of education than actual enforcement.”

Even though both came from an extensive background in security, research was still important.

“We put a business plan together and used the SCORE program — an absolutely fabulous way to go,” Rick Staly said. “We feel very blessed.”
