Celebrating 100 years

Flagler County Girl Scouts gathered Sunday, March 11, to celebrate the 100th year of Girl Scouts of America by walking the Flagler Beach Bridge.

Girl Scouts all over the country participated in a similar activity to signify bridging this century with the next.

Founded March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Ga., by Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts of America now has 3.2 million members. The program has played a pivotal part of women’s history with more than 50 million American women participating in Girl Scouts during their childhood.

The group’s main mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character.

One local teen who has taken this mission to heart is Marisa Fiume. Throughout her 10 years in the Girl Scouts program, Fiume has learned to be respectful and to treat people how she wants to be treated.

“Everyone is different,” she said. “I have learned you should love yourself for who you are and be confident.”
