The School Board voted 3-2 Tuesday, Jan. 17, to adopt a mandatory districtwide uniforms policy, which will go into effect in the fall of 2012.
“(Uniforms) are not a punishment, but a support," said Board member John Fischer, who incited the initial clothing discussion in October.
And he wasn't alone in his viewpoint. Board member Colleen Conklin and Chairwoman Sue Dickinson each stood beside him in voting "Yes" to the proposal. But it did have its opponents.
Vice-chair Andy Dance stuck to the guns he initially displayed at the very first uniform meetings.
“Whether it’s a good policy or bad, it’s just the wrong time to be having the conversation on this issue,” he said, noting more pressing issues the district could be tackling.
Trevor Tucker was also against the policy, citing financial reasons.
“We cannot use tax dollars for those who cannot afford to use uniforms, and this is my big hang-up,” he said. If 10% of the student body require aid, he said for example, that’s 1,300 uniforms the district has to supply.
The board will meet again next Wednesday, Jan. 25, to finalize dress code specifics.
