+ Hilton Garden Inn wins worldwide excellence awards
The Hilton Garden Inn Palm Coast/Town Center was one of just 24 Hilton hotels in the world to recently win awards from Hilton Worldwide for excellence in 2011. The hotel, at on 55 Town Center Blvd., ranked in the top 5% of all of Hilton Garden Inn’s 524 properties worldwide, based on its customer service, accommodations, value and other aspects.

The hotel’s general manager, Tom Grimes, was also named General Manager of the Year, and Janice Nickol was named Director of Sales of the Year, each in the company’s southern region. Only one other Hilton property had both its general manager and its director of sales receive these awards in 2011.

Grimes, who has managed the hotel since its opening in 2008, was recognized for “outstanding personal and hotel performance.”

Nickol, who has served as director of sales since 2009, was honored for her performance and leadership.
The hotel has 121 rooms and suites, as well as 2,500 square feet of meeting space. Call 586-2463.

+ Carwash saves 200,000 gallons through reuse
When Coconuts Carwash’s reclaim/reuse water system failed last week, it had to undergo four days of repair, during which time the company transferred to Palm Coast’s fresh water utility and came to some interesting realizations.

“During the four-day period, our water usage went so high the utility department flagged the account as having a problem such as a leak,” said Gunnar Hildemann, who co-owns Coconuts with his wife, Pam. “We had an extraordinary 300,000 gallons, or three times the normal usage amount, in such a short time.”

Hildemann says that he and staff were amazed at the level of water conservation the company’s reclaim/reuse technology provides, pointing to the amounts of water homeowners use daily in washing vehicles in their driveway.

+ Privately owned day-stay opens in W-section
Southern Breeze Living LLC is a new adult day-stay opening in Palm Coast’s W-section. Similar to the county-owned Adult Day Care facility, the location specializes in short-term senior care.

“We believe this is in relatively short supply and one of the more affordable alternatives for our neighbors and their loved ones,” said Dennis Dean, co-owner.

Open for business in about a week, Southern Breeze is a licensed assisted-living facility, and will hire a certified nursing assistant soon. Guests will be offered food, snacks, supervision and medication assistance while at the center.

While they initially planned it for a 24/7 care facility, Dean and his wife, Jeannette, instead chose a day-stay in consideration of other facilities’ long waiting lists. Jeannette Dean is a former teacher and both have previously owned bed-and-breakfasts in downtown St. Augustine.

The facility is located at 18 Woodward Lane. For more, call 447-7405.
