A lot has happened in the past two years since the Palm Coast Observer started publishing; but rather than look at the big picture as we celebrate our anniversary and embark on our third year, let’s talk about one of your neighbors.
The other day I flipped through the pages of our second issue and found the first letter the editor to appear in The Observer.
It came from Trina Marleese Parham, who said that on the night of Feb. 3, 2010, she was at work as a night auditor at a hotel. She heard a thump. She went out to investigate and found “a pair of retreating tail lights that had left a pile of papers, the Palm Coast Observer, in its wake.”
She wrote that she was pleasantly surprised to find that all the stories inside dealt with Palm Coast, rather than world news.
She continued: “Your publication fills a long-vacant niche that needed to be filled. I wish you success in your goals of developing long-term relationships and in helping our community grow.”
I don’t believe I’ve ever spoken to Trina, and we haven’t heard from her since that first issue. So I called her to see how the past two years have treated her.
She said her job as a night auditor was actually her second job; her day job was at Palm Coast Data. She was doing her best to save money to help get her daughter situated in college. Now, her daughter is enrolled and doing well at Stetson University, so Trina was able to quit her night job.
As a result, she was able to focus on her own ambitions, including writing. She has completed a draft of a 65,000-word romance novel, and in the next few months, she’ll finish editing it and will attempt to get it published.
