If there’s something missing in golf these days, Pine Lakes will fill that void with a mighty show Sunday, Feb. 5, and it’s free to see.
Starting at noon, the Winter Cup takes over with a golf show. Two stars from the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, Jae Oh and Susan Nam, will compete, along with Mary Hafeman, a former golf professional and current golf teacher.
Grand Club pros Michael Tsouklaris and Eric Gonzales will go shot-for-shot with the pros.
Harry Davis, who is club champion, will also play.
But the player who really gets me is someone I’ll never forget. Tangling with this illustrious group of golfers is Bill Boland, of Palm Coast. Boland is a Hall of Fame jockey who won the Kentucky Derby at age 16. He followed up to win the Belmont Stakes, but rode his Preakness mount to within a nose of first, barely missing the famed Triple Crown. He’ll also slug it out with two Pine Club owners.
And, like I said, this is free for all to watch.
In short, it’s the big game — the Winter Cup two-person tournament with a Super Bowl party in the pub beginning at 4 p.m.

My long time friend, Dave Berry, has taken on a new persona. The spotlight was all over him when he eagled the Par 5 at St. Johns Country Club from 479 yards. He used a driver, a 3-wood and 11-wood. In late January, Berry did it again, using the same clubs, but this time at Palm Harbor on a 457-yard hole. One question: Where was this when you were my partner with the Jackson group?
Ted Geppner
Another golfer who stepped into the spotlight recently was Ted Geppner, one with special meaning in this house because we both are New Hampshire bred.
On New Year’s Day, Geppner, who is the certified public accountant at Geppner & Associates, clobbered the third hole at Cypress Knoll for an eagle.
One week later, he struck Cypress again, but this time for a hole-in-one on the 14th hole.
He was in the company of wife Paula on both occasions, and it was his second ace. His first ace came at the Rochester Country Club, in New Hampshire.
Like a true New Englander, Geppner said: “They say the third time is a charm, but we will see. Go Pats!” Obviously, once a Patriot, always a Patriot!
