As we scan through the sports coverage over the last 12 months, here are some of the most memorable quotes from players and coaches, in Flagler County sports.

FEBRUARY
“It’s hard because everyone always says you’re going to look like a man or that girls aren’t supposed to be that strong. But you’re supposed to be you, and that’s what I was doing. Weightlifting is me.” — Aaliyah Lewis of FPC, after winning the girls state weightlifting title

MAY
“I’m 53 years old, and I see so many people who are always saying, ‘I wish I would’ve done this or that. Honestly, in this country, there’s no reason that you don’t. If you like to do something, give it a try. Give it your best effort because you might be surprised and able to do it.” — Mark Langello, professional sports photographer

JUNE
“Not paying bills would cause a marriage to fail, but it has made us stronger and closer because we know that with a few sacrifices, big things will indeed happen, as I hope becoming an Olympian will make me more marketable to gain sponsors that will allow me to run as a career.” — Sam Vazquez, after qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics

OCTOBER
“I really don’t know how it’s going to feel. It would be amazing. I’ll have friends there holding a hamburger and a beer, my two favorite things. But just getting to the starting line is a win for me after all I’ve been through.” — John Pieczonka, before he competed in 2012 Florida Ironman

NOVEMBER
“When Keith came here, and a lot of people don’t see this, but there was nothing here. There wasn’t a football here; there wasn’t a needle to pump up a football.” — Matanzas Athletics Director Kenny Seybold, after Keith Lagocki resigned after eight seasons as Matanzas football coach

It was a great year in sports, and I’m sure there is plenty more to come. See you in 2013!
