With just four days until the Christmas holiday, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is stepping up enforcement patrols to keep the county’s highways safe from drunk drivers as it joins with other law enforcement agencies nationwide, according to an agency press release.

This Friday (Dec. 21) and Saturday (Dec. 22), the Sheriff’s Office will have a DUI squad operating from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., throughout the county.

The squad will be patrolling and stopping anyone who is observed driving recklessly, the release states.

This local campaign will conclude with the national campaign on Jan. 2.

“Drunk drivers have the ability to devastate families when they get behind the wheel to drive,” Sheriff Donald Fleming said in a statement. “They cause accidents which lead to injuries and death. We are going to work hard to avoid that this year.”

During December 2010, 2,596 people nationwide lost their lives in motor vehicle traffic crashes and 30% of those involved alcohol-impaired drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who sees a reckless driver to call 911.

“Let’s get them off the street before tragedy happens,” Fleming said.
