Mr. 350: Pete Hald reaches career milestone

Flagler Palm Coast girls soccer coach Pete Hald picked up career win No. 350 last weekend during a Thanksgiving tournament, but he said it was bittersweet.

“It was anticlimactic,” Hald said Wednesday. The milestone came in a 9-1 win over Tampa Catholic.

“Between winning so easily and not playing to our potential earlier that day, it just wasn’t that exciting,” he said. “I have mixed feelings about it.”

Hald is in his 22nd year coaching. If you break it down, he’s averaged about 16 wins per season.

But, in typical Hald fashion, he added: “I’m glad it is over. Now onto No. 400.”

Coach Pete, as I’ve called him since I was about 12 years old, hasn’t changed a bit from the days I played for him on Apollo United, out of Ormond Beach. A lot of the drills are the same, but that’s because they work. And I’m guessing that’s a good thing.

It’s helped him develop a legacy for himself in the green and white.

And, assuming everything goes according to plan, he’ll reach and surpass 400 wins.

It might even come sooner than you think.

Carroll, Loder selected to run in All-Star meet
Thomas Carroll, of Flagler Palm Coast, and Hannah Loder, of Matanzas, were both selected to compete in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star meet, which took place Saturday, Dec. 1, in Tallahassee.

According to FPC coach David Halliday, they were the only seniors selected from the area.

The race features the top senior cross-country runners from across the state. Selections are based on runners’ performances in the state meets.

Carroll finished 22nd overall at the Class 4A state meeting, with a time of 16 minutes, 18 seconds.

Loder, a three-time state qualifier, finished 27th at the Class 3A state meet, in 19:25. Loder is the first female Matanzas runner to get selected for this, and Carroll is FPC’s first selection since Anthony Morales.

Congrats, Thomas and Hannah!
