Children in Flagler County Schools who are in the reading/mentor programs coordinated by Flagler Volunteer Services will be reading books this school year that have been donated by California author Gula Palmer.
Palmer’s initial entry into children’s literature, “Children’s Poems and Rhymes,” is designed to ignite young readers’ interest in nature. Her subjects range from sea creatures to birds, pets to farm animals, rainbows to snow, fowl to insects, trees to hills, clowns to basketball, etc. The book is illustrated by Teresa Ferracci.
Recently, Flagler Volunteer Services received 100 books, donated by Palmer for the I Can Read and ReadingPals reading/mentor programs pre-k through third grade, conducted in Flagler County Schools.
The announcement was made by Jean MacAllister, who is coordinating the programs. MacAllister credits volunteer Leticia Peoples, of Palm Coast, with acquainting Palmer, who lives in San Jose, Calif., with the reading/mentor programs through discussions with People’s brother Edward Stevens, Jr., friend of Palmer’s.
During the school year, children will receive the books for their own home library.
