A group of fifth-grade students from Rymfire Elementary School concentrated on the Linear Park butterfly garden Thursday, April 26, waiting for the chance to see a caterpillar.

The youngsters were in the park on an eco tour led by Flagler Palm Coast High School students in the Linear Park Environmental Learn and Serve Program.

Freshman Lexi Bird took the lead at Station 4, the butterfly garden, to teach about the butterfly life cycle and the differences between butterflies and moths.

Other stations taught about stormwater runoff, how to prevent pollution, birds and pH levels.

“I used to not care about this stuff,” Bird said while looking up at the trees. “But once you get into it, it’s a lot of fun.”

Bird joined the alternative program in December, after struggling in the classroom her first semester at FPC.

“School is difficult, but it’s better now,” Bird said.
