Palm Coast residents Curt and Rosine McCauley are used to life on the water, as a yacht captain and assistant harbor master, respectively. Now, they have helped a 17-year-old find land. The couple adopted Stephen, then 17, in January, and will tell their story at an event later this month.
Community Partnership for Children, a local nonprofit organization serving more than 1,400 children and their families, is hosting its seventh-annual Friends of Children Breakfast 8:30-9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, at the LPGA International, 1000 Champions Drive, in Daytona Beach.
The McCauleys will be the keynote speakers at the breakfast. Rosine McCauley is an assistant harbor master at Palm Coast Marina. She previously owned a private catering business and once served as a nanny. Curt McCauley is a yacht captain and has extensive experience sailing the Caribbean and Mediterranean.
The McCauleys joined the Community Partnership for Children Mentor Program in March 2011. They were matched as mentors to Stephen, shortly after finishing the program training. During their mentorship, the McCauleys and Stephen formed a family bond that led to adoption. They became a forever family on Jan. 20, 2012.
A review of Community Partnership adoptions records over the past three years shows less than 6% of adopted children are over the age of 15. Once children in foster care turn 17, they begin to phase from the program and are taught coping mechanisms and life skills for living on their own.
