Christ Lutheran Church recently doubled its space with the leasing of Straight Shots, a closed-down pool bar in the same complex as the church.

When Christ Lutheran opened its doors five years ago, the congregation was made up almost exclusively of senior citizens. Since then, the median age has dropped 20 years, and Sunday school attendance is overflowing, using the Rev. Chris Magnell’s office as a classroom.

“You wouldn’t think of a commercial site having a church,” Magnell said. “We’re a large church in a shopping center. Now-a-days, churches have to think outside the box.”

The lease of the extra space, which has been dubbed “The Annex,” will allow for the expansion of the church’s children’s programs.

In addition to elementary-age Sunday school classes, the church will also be launching a Wednesday night youth ministry, F.O.C.U.S. Youth (Focused on Christ’s Ultimate Sacrifice).

The vision for the youth group is to “lead the youth to know who they are in Christ, that the Bible defines them, that they are precious and created with a purpose,” Youth Minister Caroline P. Lacsamana said.

But youth ministry is just the beginning.

Magnell hopes to some day have a holistic family night, when youth and adults can go to Bible study, and children can go to childcare.

Christ Lutheran Church, 2323 N. State St., 112, Bunnell, meets 9 a.m. every Sunday for a contemporary worship and Sunday school, and 10:30 a.m. for a traditional Lutheran worship.

F.O.C.U.S. Youth will meet 7 p.m. every Wednesday, in The Annex, across the parking lot from the main church.
