In an effort to mirror a similar state initiative, the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners agreed at a Sept. 23 meeting to rename Flagler’s new economic development organization the Economic Opportunity Council.

County Administrator Craig Coffey stressed that the EOC is not just an alternately named Enterprise Flagler. The new organization will be smaller and better funded, at $400,000 in county funds.

Whereas Enterprise Flagler had one professional and one assistant, the EOC will have two professionals. “It will be a leaner, meaner organization,” Coffey said. The day-to-day minor issues will be handled by the county, allowing the two professionals to focus on economic development.

The EOC will also try to inform the public better about its activities. It will likely meet with each municipality quarterly, to discuss leads and check in. It will have a business outreach effort. Transparency will be also be a key. There will also be an emphasis on marketing and working with site selectors to bring in prospective companies.

When asked about information, Coffey stated: “I think that people are likely to have tons of information about what’s going on because we need the community to help us.”

With Flagler touting the state’s worst unemployment rate 30 out of the past 36 months, staff also plans to seek further state assistance.

Activity may seem dormant at first, Coffey said, but soon he expects it to increase as the new board is seated and the new executive director is hired.

“My board has picked a path. It’s my job to do it to the best of my ability,” he added. “I know my board cares about the people in this community. I know I care. My staff cares.”

Greg Rawls, who was named Economic Development Manager at the Sept. 19 commission meeting, will also start at county offices Monday, Sept. 26.

“I’m over talking about it,” Coffey said, resolved. It’s time to get started.
