+ State selects Flagler worker to assist on disaster team
Suzanne Eubanks, a 10-year Flagler County Emergency Services employee, has been selected to serve on a state management team for disaster response.

Eubanks will serve as needed in various roles, as Fire Rescue Operations Chief Mike Bazanos did last year.

“This is an indication of the caliber of personnel Flagler County has,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said. “We are pleased to be able to give back to others in the state some of the assistance we received during the fires.

“I am especially pleased that our personnel is recognized as the talent needed to serve on a state level,” he said.

+ Undercover pill deal lands one in Flagler County jail
Due to confidential sources in two sting operations, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tobias Miller, 32, on drug trafficking charges Sept. 13.

The first operation occurred June 24, when a source used $3,900 of authorized funds, through the Jacksonville office of the Drug Enforcement Administration, to purchase 300 pills from Miller, according to an affidavit.

The pills were later analyzed and confirmed to be oxycodone.

Another sting was executed subsequently, in which a source negotiated to buy another 500 pills from Miller Sept. 13, at 100 Flagler Plaza Drive.

Upon his arrival at the appointed meeting place, Miller saw that the confidential source was accompanied by law enforcement personnel. Miller fled on foot, and after a 30-second chase and the use of a stun gun, the officers caught Miller and brought him to jail.

Later, investigations verified that Miller, of West Palm Beah, did in fact have 500 prescription pills in his glove compartment.

+ Unpaid traffic ticket leads to marijuana charge
While Jarvus Smith, of Palm Coast’s P-section, was being brought to jail for unpaid traffic tickets, deputies discovered a surprise in his shoe.

A deputy from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office stopped Smith, 35, Sept. 15, to find that his driver’s license had been suspended; he was listed as a “habitual traffic offender” for eight charges of unpaid tickets since 2004.

When Smith was brought to the Flagler County Inmate Facility, the deputy reported that he attempted to conceal a small baggie of marijuana in his shoe.

Smith was charged with driving with a suspended license as a habitual traffic offender, possession of marijuana under 20 grams and introduction of a controlled substance into a correctional facility.

+ Rain fall drops Flagler County drought index to 494
According to Flagleremergency.com, the Sept. 19 rains dropped the drought index to 494 and the fire danger to “Low.”

“The rain certainly helped, but we need more,” said Carl Laundrie, communications manager for Flagler County. “We need some regular rainfall over a period of a month to really turn things around; otherwise, a few days of hot weather, and we are right back where we were before this weekend.”

Monday, 4.00 inches of rain were recorded in west Palm Coast, the highest in the county; 3.63 inches were recorded in east Palm Coast. Flagler Beach saw 2.14 inches, and Bunnell recorded 2.00.

The heaviest recorded rainfall in Flagler County, according to Bob Pickering, of Flagler Emergency Management, was in October 1989, when some areas of the county received 16 inches of rain in four hours, mainly in Palm Coast.
