+ Flagler unemployment: 14.6% in September
The September 2011 unemployment rate, according to the Center for Business Excellence, was 14.6 % in Flagler County. The state rate was 10.6%.

Nonagricultural employment in the Palm Coast metro area (Flagler County) was 17,600 in September 2011.

Total nonagricultural employment decreased by 3.3% (-600 jobs) over the year. Statewide, employment increased by 1.1% over the same period.

Trade, transportation, utilities and leisure/hospitality (+100 jobs each) were the only major sectors that gained jobs over the year. Manufacturing, financial activities, and education/health services remained unchanged over the year.

Government (-300 jobs); information (-200 jobs); mining, logging, construction, professional and business services and other services (-100 jobs each) also lost jobs over the year.

+ L-section group organizes, continues to fight Sawgrass
More than 60 Matanzas Woods residents met Monday, Oct. 17, at the Flagler County Public Library, regarding the multifamily Sawgrass Villas building project being considered in the L-section.

The new group will meet monthly, beginning 6 p.m. Nov. 28, at the library.

Sawgrass Villas is a proposed 50-unit, multi-family housing development between Leidel and Lee drives. Putnam State Bank owns the land and is entertaining offers from companies to buy the land for future development.

The group is planning to appeal the rezoning of the area, which would bring the matter to the City Council at a future meeting, according to one of the group’s organizers, Linda Spilling-Markey.

At the Oct. 17 library meeting, Nina and Earl Scott introduced Matanzas Woods Neighborhood News, a website they are planning to launch in 2012.

+ City to collect chemical waste, canned goods
The city of Palm Coast will hold its Household Hazardous Waste Dropoff Saturday, Nov. 12, this time adding a Team Feed Flagler food-collection element. 

Trained personnel will be on hand 8- 11 a.m., at Central Park in the Town Center, to retrieve all types of paints, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, pressurized tanks (propane/fire extinguishers), labeled resins, aerosols and freons, flares, mercury-containing items, bulbs and electronics — excluding TV sets and computer monitors. Limit waste to 15 liquid gallons or 100 pounds per household.

Feed Flagler representatives will also be on hand to accept monetary and/or food donations.
