Of 45 Dell Trayer grant applications, 26 classroom projects received grant support.

Students in Cathie Zanella’s, Jerri Berry’s and Michele Mantell’s fourth-grade Bunnell Elementary School classes will soon be planting and cultivating fruits, vegetables and herbs in a school garden. They’ll keep journals, complete with growth/watering charts, and work in groups to construct solar ovens.

When it’s harvest time, they’ll use their crops for cooking, on camera-recorded Rachel Ray-type shows, all the while improving their math, science, writing and technology skills.

Like all Dell Trayer grant recipients, Bunnell’s “Sunshine in Our Kitchen” project was chosen Sept. 23 by a panel of seven judges for exceptional hands-on learning innovation.

The School Board recognized each teacher chosen by the program Tuesday, Oct. 18, at its regular meeting.

Of 45 total applications submitted, 26 projects were chosen as the “best of the best,” receiving a combined $31,000 in grants.

Annually, the Flagler County Education Foundation leads the charge in promoting teacher applications to Dell Trayer funds. This year, the initiative was chaired by Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates Executive Vice President Rebecca DeLorenzo.

Grant funds are accumulated throughout the year from the One 4 the Kids program, a collection of about 500 school employees who donate at least $1 per pay period to the program. Employee dollars are matched by the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations, a statewide organization which serves as a conduit for business and philanthropic investment in Florida classrooms.
