As his fellow Boy Scouts shoveled rocks Monday, Oct. 24, Joshua Ore stopped and reminded them not to leave tools lying around.

Ore was working on his Eagle Scout leadership and community service project, which included planting plants and installing benches to build a garden around the existing memorial walkway, at Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church.

“It’s important that people pay attention to what the walkway is,” Ore said. “It’s not just a walkway, it’s people that have passed on, and they need to be remembered. So, I think making the garden the way it is would help people to realize that.”

Ore, a member at the church, received help from Troop 207 and the church youth group.

Another Eagle Scout, Jimmy Wells, started the memorial walkway last year, as his project. Ore said he wanted to continue the work that his friend began.

For the church, it means finally getting the area completed.

“I can’t do it anymore,” said Elder Chairman Glenn Davis Sr. “Without their involvement, we probably wouldn’t be getting this far. It’s helping them gain experience in leadership and following leadership. That’s the important thing.”
