The County Commission approved six airport-related items Oct. 17.

Half of the items on the Monday, Oct. 17, agenda of the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners related to improvements to the Flagler County Airport.

Through six unanimously approved items, the board OK’d funding for the replacement of the airport’s automated weather-observation station, accepted state funding for the design and relocation/extension of the runway and approved a design/construction contract for aircraft parking-apron rehabilitation and expansion.

A majority of all costs will be paid for through Florida Department of Transportation grants.

• The observation tower will cost $188,740, and is 100% FDOT-funded. It will provide live weather updates for Flagler County, on the county website and local weather TV channels.

“It will put us on the map on TV,” said Communications Manager Carl Laundrie.

• Runway 11-29 will be relocated and extended to 400 feet south of its current position. Currently in the design/permitting stage, the project will be paid for 95% by the Federal Aviation Administration ($598,500), 4% by FDOT ($25,200) and 1% locally ($6,300).

• As part of the relocation/construction of the runway, surrounding safety areas will be improved, as well. The cost, which includes the design, permitting, wetland mitigation and construction, is said to be a worst-case projection and will be refined after an environmental assessment takes place.

FDOT will fund 80% ($175,656), while the airport will cover the other 20% ($43,914).

• Along with rehabilitation, about 38,000 feet of new aircraft parking apron will be constructed on the east side of the flight line.

FDOT will fund the project 100%, at $831,635.

Projects previously approved by the commission are as follows:

• Design/construction of a south entrance road will provide access to 120 acres of land for future development. It is a $1 million project, 50% FDOT-funded.

• Design/construction of two buildings containing 10 T-hangers each, with associated taxi lanes, is expected to bring an additional $72,000 in annual revenue to the airport.

FDOT will fund 98% of the project, at $1,187,148; the airport will pay 2%, at $27,600.
