The African American Cultural Society celebrated its 20th anniversary Friday, Oct. 14 with a dinner dance, at the center, and Saturday, Oct. 15, with a family day, at Town Center.
“We felt that having something like this would allow outreach to the community,” said Bill Seeney, event coordinator.
In addition to promoting and preserving African American cultural heritage, Seeney and the club also wanted to invite a diverse group of entertainers to reach out to the community.
But the celebration is not over yet. Civil rights icon Andrew Young will speak 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Matanzas High School Auditorium.
Young was the top aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and founding principal and chair of GoodWorks International, which facilitates economic development in the Caribbean and Africa.
Preferred seating at the auditorium is $30; general seating is $15. Students ages 14 to 23 with IDs will be admitted free.
Following the speech, there will be a reception at the cultural center, at 4422 U.S. 1 N.
