First things first. Before the Service of Remembrance began Oct. 18, Family Life Center Executive Director Trish Giaccone handed a donated Walmart gift card to Joy Euie, program director, and asked her to stop and buy milk with it, in the morning, for the 20 children and 11 mothers housed by the center.

Then, the service began. The event, held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, was designed to promote Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“We are here tonight to respond to a very serious problem in the community and throughout the world,” said Bradley Hauff, Family Life Center board president.

Domestic violence can be a confusing thing, Hauff told service attendees, because it takes place in a family environment with people who think they love each other.

Tammy Durling is a single mom with four children, who brought a face to the domestic violence survivor, with her story of how the center got her on her feet after she left her batterer, with only her vehicles and the clothes on their back.

“I know I was so blessed to walk into a beautiful home where I could cook and clean my clothes,” Durling said of her 14-week stay at the shelter.

Hauff reminded service attendees that abuse is a learned behavior and can be unlearned.
