After some debate, the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners agreed to interview the full list of applicants to the newly formed Economic Opportunity Advisory Council, the morning of Oct. 25 (9 a.m.), and the afternoon of Oct. 27 (2:30 p.m.), at a location to be determined.

Although commissioners George Hanns and Nate McLaughlin were ready to vote on applicants the night of the Oct. 17 commission meeting, other commissioners believed a face-to-face with potential board members was necessary.

“It’s very difficult to look at a sheet of paper with someone’s resume, without having the ability to ask them questions,” Milissa Holland said. “I think it’s important that we take the time, rather than just rushing into something immediately.”

She pointed out that staff had only received some of the EOC applications three days prior, late Friday, Oct. 14.

Revels suggested each commissioner rank their two favorite applicants from each category then, at a workshop, interview those 16. Then, there would be a vote on appointments.

Commission Chairman Alan Peterson suggested each commissioner speak with their favorites privately before appointing.

It was decided that all 30-plus applicants would be interviewed in five-minute blocks at two separate sessions in October.

The seven designated industries in which board members will be appointed are as follows: Agriculture; Developer/Realtor; Finance; Hi-tech; Marketing; Manufacturing; and At-large.

County Administrator Craig Coffey also reported that his office has received 33 applications for an Economic Opportunity Council CEO, from a national search. He identified six of those 33 applications as “strong.”
