It’s not something any driver wants to see: another vehicle passing by, motioning frantically to indicate your truck is on fire.

But that’s what happened to Ean Manning, 45, as he was driving a Freight Liner tractor-trailer for his moving company. His trailer was loaded with a customer’s personal belongings, including furniture and clothing, according to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Manning was driving the truck at 6:37 p.m., Oct. 12, northbound on Interstate 95, at about mile marker 295.8, in Flagler County. Another vehicle passed by and gave Manning the bad news.

At that time, Manning pulled onto the shoulder and saw the smoke. He got out and opened the rear doors of the trailer. There, on top of the cargo, the flames were blazing.

He grabbed a fire extinguisher from his cab and attempted to put the fire out, but it wasn’t enough.

Thinking quickly, he unhitched the trailer and moved the truck forward to keep it out of danger. Flagler County Fire Rescue then responded and put the fire out.

Both northbound lanes were blocked for about 10 minutes. But by 10 p.m., both lanes had been reopened. Manning, who is from Lauderhill, sustained minor burns.
