Dressed head-to-toe in purple and red, a room full of women older than 50 raised their right hands, placed them on their red hats and repeated these words: “I promise to greet middle age with humor and take silliness seriously.”

The local Red Hats Society celebrated its 10th anniversary, Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Halifax County Club.

“The Red Hat Society gives women permission to take a break and focus on their own lives, even if it is just for an afternoon or evening out,” said Lillian Von der Osten, who co-founded the Razzle Dazzle Girls, the Palm Coast chapter of the Red Hat Society, with her childhood friend, Lucille Figliolia.

At the luncheon, the ladies also pledged to eat dessert first, if they wanted to, and to dispel the notion that women of their age are old, as laid out by the Red Hat Pledge.

“When our husbands and partners see us putting on the red hat, they stand back because they know there is no stopping us,” Von der Osten said.
