As of 4:30 p.m., traffic heading north on U.S. 1 from Ormond Beach was being diverted onto Old Dixie Highway because of "smoke and fire," according to Flagler County Communications Manager Carl Laundrie. It is one of 14 currently active in the county.

A fire flared up near Old Dixie Highway on U.S. 1, he said, near the White Eagle Lounge. It is heading westward, and is trying to “jump” U.S. 1 from winds out of the east.

Although homes have been threatened, Laundrie said, none have been affected.

Two helicopters, from the Florida Department of Forestry and Flagler County's Fireflight, have been working to keep it from spreading any farther.

No estimates of size have been recorded. No announcements of when U.S. 1 will reopen have been made.
