The Flagler County Memorial Day ceremony drew a crowd that filled the walkway under the awning in front the Government Services Building. To begin the ceremony, County Commission Chairman Alan Peterson made the following remarks:

“As you listen to the speakers and watch these ceremonies, I hope that we will always remember the individuals we honor today and the sacrifice that they made. They should not become just names on the wall or on a cemetery marker.

“Today has always been a special day of remembrance for me because my uncle's brother died in World War I.

“In World War II, shortly after my father was transferred by the army to the West Coast, his original unit was sent to Europe. Many of those soldiers did not return and almost all those that didn't have been wounded.

“My own active duty was when the Vietnam War was just beginning, and we were training South Vietnamese officers in this country. I became friendly with several and have always wondered whether they survived.

“As you hear Judge Zambrano sound taps for those we honor today, please remember the words to that music which say: ‘Day is done. Gone the sun. From the hills. From the lake. From the skies. All is well. Safely rest. God is nigh.’”

Circuit Judge Raul Zambrano concluded the event by playing taps.
