A small fire was doused by a firefighting helicopter, which used a 216-gallon bucket to scoop water from a nearby pond May 27.

Corey Sherman heard the thunder clap, May 27, and drove to Central Park at Town Center, where he was able to photograph the firefighting helicopter scooping water from a nearby pond and dousing the flames.

According to Palm Coast Fire Chief Mike Beadle, the fire resulted from one of about three lightning strikes in Flagler County in the thunderstorm the afternoon of May 27. The helicopter pilot spotted the fire in the woods behind Epic Theaters, in Palm Coast’s Town Center.

The strike caused a fire that was contained to an area of about 25-by-50 feet. The helicopter used a 216-gallon bucket to put the fire out. The Division of Forestry the cleared the way in the woods for Palm Coast firefighters to do the “mop up,” Beadle said.

“Luckily, there was water pretty close,” Beadle said. “Our pilots are very skilled at what they do, so they’re able to do a lot with that 216 gallons of water.”

He said the firefighters will check on the fire in the next two days to make sure nothing flares back up. Another lightning strike occurred in Bunnell and another one or two west in the county, Beadle said.
