Flagler County will have no fireworks this year to celebrate the Fourth of July. The decision was made by the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners in the June 20 meeting.
Fires around the county have caused a burn ban to be in place for months, and the ban will not be lifted for the celebration. (For previous fire coverage, click here.)
Flagler Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito said, “We’re doing a lot better than we were doing two weeks ago, but we still have 16 active fires that we’re working on.”
Commissioner Milissa Holland: “It would be my suggestion that we don’t want the fireworks … It honors the men and women who are out there day in and day out who are fighting the fires.”
Palm Coast City Manager Jim Landon advised that the City Council hasn’t spoken about it yet, but he said he favored the ban on fireworks.
“I agree with commission Holland,” he said. “It just doesn’t send the right message. It’s very, very dangerous out there right now.”
Parades and other events scheduled around the county will continue as planned.
Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates President Doug Baxter suggested that the fireworks could possibly take place on Labor Day, instead.
Commissioner George Hanns said, “The significance and true meaning of the Fourth of July … will not be lost.”
