+ Carver Center agreement ratified by County Commission
The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners approved a motion to finalize its interlocal agreement with the Flagler County School Board regarding the facility’s maintenance and operations. Under the agreement, the county will maintain the building, at a cost of $50,000. In total, the Carver Center will operate on a budget of $85,000 split between multiple partners, including the county, city of Bunnell, the School Board and grants.

The Carver Center will host community programs, such as nutrition and gardening, as well tutoring services and athletics. (For a story about the auction in support of the Carver Center, see Page 6B.)

+ Artificial reef to be installed; could boost tourism, diving
The County Commission awarded a contract to Dell Marine LLC, in the amount of $68,000 (mostly grant-sponsored), for the construction of the Grady Prather Artificial Reef Project. The reef will be installed within Flagler’s Artificial Reef Site No. 3 and includes 500 tons of concrete material from a staging area located in St. Johns County.

According to County Commissioner Craig Coffey, the reef will offer habitat for fish, help tourism and make interesting new spots for divers.

+ Land Development advisers appointed for Flagler County
The County Commission voted four members onto the Land Development Code Advisory Committee, June 6: Jason DeLorenzo, Thad Crowe, Joshua Rosenbaum and Elbert Tucker.

+ School Board renews iFlagler
The School Board approved the renewal of iFlagler, a franchise of Flagler Virtual School, for seventh- through 12th-grade students, for the next school year. Sixth grade was added to the program’s offerings. Legislation requires that districts offer virtual instruction.

+ Three juveniles arrested for school break-in
Three middle-school students were arrested June 6, after Flagler County Sheriff’s School Resource Deputy Eric Kuleski reported a Buddy Taylor Middle School maintenance office was entered through an unlocked door late Saturday evening. Once inside, three youngsters made a pot of coffee, ate pudding and broke light bulbs. They were charged with felonies.

+ Deputy administers aid to newborn; baby survives
Deputy Erik Pedersen was the first to respond to the home on Slatington Place about 4:30 a.m., June 2, after a 911 call reported a 28-year-old woman, 36 weeks pregnant, was giving birth.

Pedersen said when he arrived to the home the woman was on the living room floor, crying and holding the newborn.

He could see only the head of the baby and it appeared to be blue. He took the infant from the mother and began rubbing his back to make him cry, to clear his airway. The newborn began turning pink and started to cry. Mother and baby were transported to an Ormond hospital where they were reportedly doing fine later that morning. The baby weighed 4 pounds, 6 ounces.

+ Firefighters solicit bottled water donations
Officials are asking residents to deliver bottles of drinking water to the Emergency Operations Center, in support of the 100 men and women from multiple agencies — including some property owners protecting their timberland — fighting the fires.

The bottles should be small enough for firefighters to carry in their pants or coat pockets — ideally 12 to 20 ounces.

Emergency Operations Chief Troy Harper said crews could also use pocket-size snacks, such as granola bars. It’s preferred to bring donations to the EOC, at 1769 E. Moody Blvd., Building 3.  If residents cannot deliver there, goods can also be brought to the nearest fire station — except for stations 71 and 31, respectively, which are manned by volunteers only in Flagler County.

+ Corrections
Martin Elieser Sanchez Rios was arrested May 20 at the shopping center at Flagler Plaza Drive.

Tyler Swyer attended the Raise Your Voice for Service-Learning Conference, in Tallahassee.

The Christ Lutheran Vacation Bible School will take place July 11 to July 15. Call 437-4113.
