Hurricane seminar coming to Palm Coast

The 2011 hurricane season officially began June 1, and though there is only one tropical disturbance in the Atlantic basin as of June 7, experts are predicting an above-normal hurricane season this year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center — a division of the National Weather Service — is predicting the following ranges for the six-month season:

Twelve to 18 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which six to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher, including three to six major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher).

What’s the best way to prepare for a possibly busy hurricane season?

Award-winning meteorologist Dave Marsh, formerly chief of the WESH-TV weather broadcasting team, will join local hurricane/disaster preparedness experts to help you get ready for the upcoming 2011 hurricane season.

A free Hurricane Preparedness Seminar will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at the Palm Coast Community Center.

Palm Coast Fire Chief Mike Beadle, Flagler County Emergency Management Chief Troy Harper, University of Florida Extension’s Sharon Treen and Florida Department of Financial Services’ Randell Brown will also be on hand to provide you with everything you need to know to help keep you safe and well-prepared.

The seminar will be simulcast live on WNZF Radio — 1550 AM/106.3FM — and also on the city of Palm Coast’s Cable TV199 and Flagler County’s TV198. A raffle will be held for free safety items. Advance registration is not necessary to attend this seminar.
