Officials are asking residents to deliver bottles of drinking water to the Emergency Operations Center, in support of the 100 men and women from multiple agencies — including some from property owners protecting their timberland — fighting the fires.

The bottles should be small enough for the firefighters to carry with them in their pants or coat pockets. The organization CHAMPS, led by Amanda Mazzie, is recommending 12- to 20-ounce bottles.

Emergency Management Chief Troy Harper said gallon-size bottles are not needed. He added that Mazzie delivered donations Saturday, and the firefighters were most appreciative.

He also said the crews could use granola bars or other pocket-size snacks. It’s preferred to bring the materials to the EOC, at 1769 E. Moody Blvd., Building 3.

The EOC is the main staging area for the firefighters, Harper said, and some crews are waiting there just in case of other fire outbreaks. If residents cannot deliver goods there, they can make deliveries to the nearest fire station (except for stations 71 and 31, respectively, which are manned by volunteers only in Flagler County).

At 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 6, Harper noted that two more fires broke out near Lake Disston in southwest Flagler County. There are about two dozen homes along the lakefront property.

The drought index is at 679 out of 800, according to www.FlaglerEmergency.com. Harper said 250 to 300 is a safer range.

“We’ve been over 400 for many months,” Harper said.

For the past two years, Flagler County has been averaging about 25 to 30 inches of rain — about half the traditional rain fall average.
