Thanks to a goal and an assist by Miranda Campbell, and strong play from Victoria Martins and the Lady Bulldogs defenders, Flagler Palm Coast High School improved to 14-0-2 with a defeat of Matanzas High School Dec. 16, at Matanzas.
“Martins was the best player on the field tonight,” FPC coach Pete Hald said.
FPC freshman forward Christen Barney caused problems for Matanzas, as well, and she teamed up with Campbell for two great scoring chances late in the second half. Barney scored on the second try.
The defense, particularly Allyson Smith, was able to bottle up explosive Matanzas sophomore Gabbi Paiz, as well.
Because poor weather conditions forced schedule changes, the game was the third in three days for FPC. With two wins and a tie, Hald said that even being undefeated might not be enough to give the team the top seed in the district.
Despite the loss for Matanzas, it was a good week for the Lady Pirates. They locked up the top seed in the St. Johns River Athletic Conference, and will play Jan. 10 for the title.
Senior co-captain Leana Lourenco said the Lady Pirates need to stay positive with each other, so that if they fall behind in future games, they can continue to play hard.
