About four years ago, I had the honor of playing golf at the delightful Hammock Dunes Course with John Subers, who is the director of the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation.
With us was his son, Carter, who was about 12 years old at the time.
Simply said, Carter socked the ball. He whipped a shot out of a difficult bunker and into the hole for a birdie.
Carter just finished his freshman season on the Matanzas golf team, at 15.
Playing a practice round at a St. Johns County golf club prior to a school match, and with his dad at the time, Carter used a 6-iron on the par-3 eighth hole from 167 yards out and, bingo, his first hole-in-one!
John and Carter Subers are two people that make me maintain my thought that golf is the best sport.
Hackers like me get to enjoy the great outdoors and get to know great people who become treasured friends for life. That’s unmatchable.

More unmatchable people are the ladies of Grand Reserve golf.
They staged their holiday luncheon on a golf day that was more than that.
Mary Page Slovak and her team of players — Shay Hall, Wanda Eller, Rae Ann Schumacher, Diana Mariano, Marie Sposa and more — took their 50/50 game loot from the year past and gave $262 to the Grace Community Food Pantry.
Loud applause for golfers Sharon Walter, Pat Westbrook, Janice Peterson, Karen Varriale, Marilyn Alexander, and a boat load of good hearts.
Ty Capps is back in town, taking a breather before slugging his way to the PGA Pro Tour at the beginning of next year.
Speaking of good people and places to play golf, don’t overlook Grand Haven, in Palm Coast, and its fabulous Jack Nicklaus design. It’s a gem that event leaders too often fail to call on.
It’s a shame, because any course that can boast Dane Winger, Hawley Rogers, Bob Borer, Walt McRae and others of such quality, has got to be very special.
