With microscope in hand, each student in Irene Page’s sixth-grade class carefully picked up a sliver of algae. The students then placed the algae within reach of a mud snail waiting in a dish of seawater and watched closely. For two minutes, they observed and noted whether the snail ate the algae. Students then substituted the algae for shrimp and repeated.

This was one of four experiments that the Old Kings Elementary School students conducted Dec. 1, during their visit to the University of Florida’s Whitney Lab, in Marineland.

A Dell Trayer Teacher Grant funded the day at the lab, which will be visited by all Old Kings sixth-grade students.

Following their visit, students will make a presentation with what they learned and will use pictures from their trip to teach younger students.
