The tournament, which took place Aug. 13, at the Carver Gym, featured two local teams.

It’s the offseason for the NBA, but in Bunnell, the hardwood was squeaking all day Aug. 13, as four teams battled in the inaugural Masonic King of the Courts tournament, which was hosted by Masonic Espanola Lodge 161.

Four teams participated, including two from Palm Coast; the Palatka Police Athletic Team took home the trophy.

James Borgmann, of Espanola Lodge 161, said the tournament was designed to help youth basketball players continue developing their skills over the summer.

“We just wanted to provide some type of athletic activity for the children,” Borgmann said.

He said he hopes to have several of these tournaments throughout the year, with seven or eight teams.

As for the first tournament, Borgmann said it was a success.

“I just want to say that it was a great opportunity to utilize the Carver Gym,” he said. “We’ve been going through a lot over the past year with it almost closing ... It was a great event for youth in this community and surrounding communities to have a good event (there).”
