+ Matanzas flag football falls short of districts
The Matanzas Lady Pirates flag football team defeated DeLand Monday, April 11, with a final score of 12-7.

Chakia Davis went 9-for-18 passing for 87 yards and two touchdown passes. Alyssa Santos had seven carries for 38 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Defensively, Victoria Ecker had nine flag pulls, and Gabby Paiz had six flag pulls, two for a loss. Stephanie Grebe and Rebecca Wright each had an interception.

However, in a must-win game for the Lady Pirateds to reach the district tournament for the first time in school history, Matanzas lost to Mainland, 13-0, Tuesday, April 12.

+ Bulldogs beat Tallahassee Leon, lose to Creekside
The Flagler Palm Coast boys lacrosse team defeated Tallahassee Leon, Saturday, April 9 9-7, Saturday, April 9.

FPC (8-5) had contributions from Wes Adams (two goals, three assists), Ryan Devens (three goals) and Shane Noble (two goals).

The Bulldogs lost to Creekside, 12-5, Tuesday, April 12, on senior night at FPC.

+ Kevin Moore leads way for Pirates baseball
Kevin Moore pitched a complete-game shutout Saturday, April 9, stymieing the Pedro Menendez batters and allowing just two hits to earn the 2-0 win.

Moore tallied five strikeouts and didn’t issue a walk over seven innings.

Offensively, Daylan Holloman and Jon Lambright did the damage with one RBI apiece. Lambright had two of the Pirates’ four hits.

 

DISTRICT CHAMPS
Emily Acierno, of Flagler Palm Coast High School, and Sam Mkrtychev, of Matanzas High School, each won the singles district championships last week.

Acierno, the No. 1 girls player for the Lady Bulldogs, defeated Zhoe Solaun, the No. 2 seed from Buccholz High School, in two sets, 6-2 and 6-3.

“Emily played the best I had seen her play this entire season,” said coach DeAnn Palmer. “She set her mind to winning and did just that. As a first-year coach, I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Next up for Acierno is the state competition, which will take place Wednesday, April 20, through Friday, April 22, at Lake Brantley High School, in Altamonte Springs.

Mkrtychev, the No. 1 player for the Matanzas Pirates boys tennis team, also claimed the district championship for singles.

Mkrtychev defeated Connor Garyotis, of Nease, in three sets, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-1.

“Sam came out on fire, hitting a high percentage of first serves in and hitting several hard forehands for winners,” said coach Rich Cottingham. Cottingham said Mkrtychev “did a good job collecting himself and rebounding to play a great third set.”

Mkrtychev advances to the state competition as a single player for the first time in his career.

“I’m very happy for him; he’s put a lot of time in, and it’s paid off,” Cottingham added.

The state competition will take place Wednesday, April 20, through Friday, April 22, at Sylvan Lake Park, in Sanford.
